Egyptian/Sudanese M.1867 Remington Rolling Block RifleCaliber: 43 Egyptian. Price: $750 Inventory # arc_0408 |
DESCRIPTION: Scarce Egyptian/Sudanese Remington Rolling Block rifle in .43 Egyptian caliber. There is a very similar rifle pictured on page 34 in "The Military Remington Rolling Block Rifle" by George Layman. Manufactured by Remington Arms Co., Ilion, N.Y. U.S.A, as indicated by markings on the receiver tang (fading, due to the excessive cleaning; it has been reported that the Egyptian and Sudanese soldiers used desert sand to clean metal surfaces of their Remington rifles). The dates on the tang are unrecognizable due to the same reason. The chamber displays several Arabic numbers and the Mahdi mark, which according to George Layman indicate the usage of the rifle by the Sudanese Mahdi army (please, see pictures). The canceled numbers are Sudanese, lined out after the rifle was taken back by the victorious British. Original military configuration. The left side of the receiver displays inverted crescent surrounding "EP"(George Layman believes that "EP" is an Egyptian police property mark, see "The Military Remington Rolling Block Rifle", p. 34). Metal has about 75% of its original finish. The balance is in white. No pitting. The bore is in fine condition with strong and shiny rifling. The action is strong. Very Interesting Spanish Army Contract M.1870 Remington Rolling Block Infantry RifleCaliber: 11 x 58 R, rimmed (.43 Spanish) Price: $1975 Inventory # arc_0404 |
DESCRIPTION: The rifle appears to be one of the very last of the original, American made, Remington Spanish Models' ordered by Spain following its official adoption in February of 1871. Spain started production of the rolling block rifles in its own arsenal at Oviedo in 1870. There is a Spanish Fleur d' Lis mark on the left side of the frame, which indicates Spanish ownership of the rifle. The markings on the right side of the buttstock, "MO" most likely stand for "Modelo" (Model). The number, "2367" mistakenly stands for Feb. 3, 1867, which should be 2.3.71 for Feb 3, 1871 (thus it was lined, or canceled out as a mistake). The second number starts with letter, "PC " (Patria Cubana?). The rifle may have been issued to the Cuban Colonial Garrison. Spanish Crowns are stamped on each of the three barrel bands. Three-lines, new style Remington address on the tang. Two piece walnut stock without the handguard (correct). Second issue type breech block without screw for retaining the firing pin. Solid type barrel bands retained by springs in the stock. Round barrel. Ramp-and-leaf rear sight hinged at the back of the block. Two step hammer. Concave buttplate. Complete with the cleaning rod. This type of rifle was used in large numbers during the Spanish-American War. CONDITION: Excellent. There is about 92% of the original finish on metal, turning to brownish color in some places. Occasional spots of light patina. The stocks show some minor handling marks. Otherwise, the stocks are solid and smooth. Nice, crisp action. Excellent bore with strong and shiny rifling. All the internal parts of the rifle are in fine condition, with no visible wear. The rifle does not show any repairs. All the parts are original to the rifle. Overall length: 50.50 inch. Barrel length: 35 inch. Very interesting Spanish army Remington Rolling Block rifle from the time of Spanish-American War! Antique. |

The left side of the buttstock displays company's name, "BATJAC" (please, see pictures). DESCRIPTION: Scarce Whitney-Laidley Rolling Block infantry rifle in all original condition! Only about 30.000 of such rifles were ever manufactured. They were mostly made for some Latin American countries. Few of these rifles ended up in US collections, usually in well worn condition. Three-lines Whitney address on the tang with all the patent dates, "WHITNEYVILLE ARMORY CO. PATENTED OCT 17 '65, RE-IS'D JUNE 25, '72, DEC 26, '65, RE-IS'D OCT 1, '67, MAY 15 '66, JULY 16 '72". I am not sure about the exact caliber of this rifle. Whitney rifle was manufactured in this configuration in several similar rimfire calibers,.43, .44, .45, so most likely it is one of them. The upper part of the buttstock displays a brass ring with property/unit (?) markings, "18". The same number is stamped on the wood and on the buttplate (please, see pictures).
